What is SEO? The beginner’s guide to search engine optimisation.

SEO, search engine optimisation, is the work of making your website visible in Google when customers search for what you offer. It rests on three parts: a technically sound website, content that answers what people ask, and trust in the form of local presence and links. This guide explains how it works, without jargon.

How Google decides who is visible

When someone googles, Google goes through its index and ranks the pages by hundreds of signals. Simplified, Google asks three questions: Can we read and understand the page? Does it answer what the user is looking for? Can we trust the sender? SEO is the work of being able to answer yes to all three.

Part 1: The technology

The site must load fast, work on mobile and be built so Google can read it: proper heading structure, working links, a sitemap and structured data describing who you are and what you offer. Technical SEO is invisible to the visitor but decides whether the rest of the work has any effect.

Part 2: The content

Google ranks pages that answer questions. That is why good SEO starts with finding out what your customers actually search for, using real search data instead of guesswork, and then writing content that answers directly: service pages for buying questions, guides for knowledge questions.

Part 3: The trust

Google rewards senders that appear trustworthy: a complete Google Business Profile, reviews, accurate contact information and links from other reputable websites. For local businesses, the Google Business Profile is often the fastest route to more customers.

The new part: AI search is changing the game

More and more people ask ChatGPT or see Google’s AI Overview instead of clicking through the link list. That makes content quality even more important: AI services cite pages with clear structure and straight answers. The work of being visible there is called GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, and builds on the same foundation as SEO. We have a whole guide about it: Is your business visible in ChatGPT?

How long does SEO take?

Expect three to six months before clear effects, sometimes faster if the foundation is good. SEO is an investment that builds value over time: a page that ranks keeps delivering visitors at no cost per click, unlike ads that stop the day you stop paying.

Can you do SEO yourself?

The basics, absolutely: write content that answers your customers’ questions, keep the site fast, set up a complete Google Business Profile and ask happy customers for reviews. What is hard to do yourself is the technical analysis, the keyword data and the persistence. A reasonable rule of thumb: do the basics yourself, get help when SEO should become a growth engine.

SEO is the organic visibility you build; SEM (often Google Ads) is the paid kind. SEO takes longer but you own it; ads deliver fast but cost continuously. They work best together.

Indirectly. Shares and presence build brand and traffic, which can lead to mentions and links that strengthen trust. But social posts do not rank your site by themselves.

Demand transparency: you should see rankings, traffic and conversions reported every month, not just an invoice. With us, a monthly report is included where you see exactly what the work delivers.
