Building a business website: everything you need to know.

A good business website is built in seven steps: goals, content, platform, design, SEO foundation, launch and operations. This guide walks through each step and the most common mistakes, whether you build it yourself or hire an agency.

Step 1: Decide what the website should achieve

A website without a clear goal becomes a digital brochure nobody reads. First decide what it should do: generate enquiries, sell products, book meetings or build trust. That goal then guides every decision, from structure to button copy.

Step 2: Content before design

The most common mistake is designing first and writing later. Do the opposite: list the questions your customers actually ask and write content that answers them. It is the content that ranks in Google and gets cited by AI services, not the design. How ranking works is explained in our beginner’s guide to SEO.

Step 3: Choose a platform

For most businesses WordPress is the right choice: you own the site, can edit it yourself, and are never locked in with a supplier. Site builders like Wix and Squarespace are quick to start with but limit you as needs grow, and you can rarely take the site with you.

Step 4: Design that leads to action

Good business design is not art, it is clarity: within seconds a visitor should understand what you do, for whom, and what the next step is. Mobile optimisation is not optional; the majority of visits happen on mobile.

Step 5: The SEO foundation is built in, not bolted on

Structure, load time, metadata and structured data should be in place from launch day. Building the site first and thinking about Google later is like building the house first and drawing the plans afterwards. Ask your supplier concretely what is included SEO-wise.

Step 6: Launch without losing anything

If you are replacing an existing site, old addresses must be redirected to the new ones, or you lose both visitors and Google value. This is called 301 redirecting and is standard at any serious agency. With us it is always included in moves and rebuilds.

Step 7: Operations are not optional

A WordPress site nobody updates becomes a security risk within months. Expect an ongoing cost for hosting, updates, security and backups, with us from SEK 790 per month, and think of it as insurance rather than an expense.

Build it yourself or hire an agency?

Build it yourself if the budget is minimal and time plentiful, and the site’s job is merely to exist. Hire an agency when the site should generate business: then the craftsmanship pays for itself in visibility, trust and conversions. A middle road is moving an existing site to an agency that handles operations and development, with us from SEK 2,990.

Frequently asked questions

At Beat Web, a typical business website is normally ready within three to four weeks from approved design. If you build it yourself it depends entirely on your time and experience.

A clear goal, copy or material about your business, a logo and brand guidelines if you have them, and examples of sites you like. The better the material, the faster and better the result.

For Swedish businesses .se is usually best: customers recognise it and it signals local presence. If you already have a .com that works too; what matters is that you own the domain yourself.
